Immigration Postcard

  1. Students in 78 (Grade 8s) and 8a are finishing up our history unit, Canada: A Changing Society, by completing their final project of an immigration postcard. Students will research an immigrant group of their choice (they have already chose this through the Immigration Application Assignment) and use primary and secondary sources to uncover what the transition to Canada was like. Students will explore perspectives, discrimination and some of the links between immigration patterns and Canada’s cultural diversity today.

The links that students will follow can be found in the HUB through the HWDSB website.

2) Once students have written their rough draft for their postcards, they will edit and revise with a partner. To revise, use the following guidelines to make sure you have all the necessary components for assessment.

REVISING: Check your facts

Do you have:

  • Specific facts to show knowledge of challenges, discrimination, changes in Canada
  • Knowledge of perspective (opinion, values, beliefs) using SPECIFIC examples
  • Useful image that shows understanding of settlement
  • Organized ideas in proper paragraph format, strong vocabulary and descriptions (Writing)

ALL OF THESE WILL BE ASSESSED. IF YOU ARE MISSING ANY OF THEM, YOU WILL LOSE MARKS!
