Comparative Writing: The Giver VS. Waterdown

Students have been discussing the language used and ways that we can compare to places, things or people. Students have created graphic organizers to sort compare/contrast the two societies in 3 ways.

Once you have finished your rough draft of the body paragraphs, you will have to revise your writing to improve the quality. Use the following checklist and instructions to help you revise your body paragraphs:

Revising To Do List

1) For each paragraph:

  • Underline the comparative words used in each sentence (ie. similar, different, better than, etc.). Make sure that each word is not used more than once in each paragraph (Don’t be repetitive!).
  • Find verbs or adjectives that can be described with stronger vocabulary (Use a THESAURUS).

(EX. Dogs can run faster than cats. The word “Run” is boring and can be replaced with “sprint, race, rush,” or “dash.” The adverb “Faster” can be replaced with “at a greater speed, with more acceleration than, etc.”)

2) Check the topic sentence of each paragraph

  • Does it properly introduce the idea of the paragraph? What can you add or remove to make the sentence clearer to the reader?
  • Read EACH SENTENCE and see if it relates to the topic sentence. Does it stay on topic or do you need to change wording/ideas?

(EX. TOPIC: Hockey is one of the most difficult sports to play.

SUPPORT: Wayne Gretzky played for 3 different teams and was the most accomplished hockey player of all time.

These two sentences are both related to Hockey, but the support does not follow the topic sentence accurately.)

3) Do my paragraphs transition smoothly? Do each of my paragraphs end and begin without being choppy? Can I use related ideas to link paragraphs together?
