Giver Journal Responses

The Giver: Journal Responses

  1. Jonas describes his feelings as he approaches his ceremony of twelve, where he will become an adult and begin his role in the community. If you were in the position of Jonas and were to enter adulthood at the age of 12, how would you feel about being assigned one job for your entire life?
  2. Choose one aspect of the story that we have learned so far. This could be Gabriel’s difficulties, Jonas’ assignment, the societal structure, etc. Make a prediction of what will happen in the upcoming chapters. Provide reasons for your prediction.
  3. a) What does Jonas’ set of instructions and new “Rules” show about his new role in the community? b) Which one of these rules does Jonas have the hardest time with and why?
  4. Jonas has discovered what his special ability of “seeing beyond” really is. Based on what we have read so far, why would the community have gotten rid of colour, and what effect could this have if it were taken out of our society also (positive or negative)?
